Voice: Carter not providing answers, Mendoza a better choice

February 23, 2002

I would like to know why Mr. Carter is not concerned about the Northend and the other small towns like Ocotillo, Palo Verde and Salton City. We all belong to Imperial County just like El Centro does. I have heard a lot of complaints about that.

I went to the two forums here in Brawley (one at the American Citizens Club and one at the Hidalgo Society). I was ready to ask him some questions but he wasn't there. Mr. Carter is not accessible as an elected official should be.

Are we supposed to use a walkie-talkie? The man who read the letter for him at the forum just read a form letter. We needed to ask him questions on some of the issues but Mr. Carter did not show up.

He is not fully aware of Sheriff's Office internal personnel problems. He eliminated resident deputy positions in the outlying areas and there are many nights when only one deputy patrols the Northend. The $500,000 grant the county received went for overtime patrolling the sand dunes, not hiring much-needed deputies.

As for experience, he might have experience as a police officer for a town but a county needs more than that. To me Mr. Mendoza has more experience as a countywide sheriff than Mr. Carter does. Everything they say in the newspaper is just a front. There is nothing in black and white to prove what he says is true. There is a big difference between being the chef and being a kitchen helper.
