New El Centro postmaster sworn in

February 23, 2002|By RUDY YNIGUEZ, Staff Writer

Brawley native Cynthia Gibson is the new postmaster of the El Centro Post Office.

She was sworn in Friday in a ceremony attended by local officials and fellow postmasters from throughout the Imperial Valley and Coachella Valley.

Gibson, 38, has worked at numerous post offices in the Valley besides El Centro, where her career began in 1983. She's worked at Ocotillo, Brawley, Imperial, Westmorland and Coachella.

After being sworn in Gibson thanked her family and supporters for their support and encouragement.

"I look forward to serving you," she said. "I'm just a phone call away."

Gibson became postmaster on a temporary basis in December, replacing Pete Race, who retired in August.

Gibson was asked what kind of changes she brings.

"It'll take time," she said. "More than anything is to bring this office into this century with all the changes" such as automation, she said.

The El Centro post office has 61 employees, 21 city routes and four rural routes. She praised the quality of employees working at this city's postal facility.

Gibson said her goal was always to be postmaster of El Centro because it is where her career began.

The event included a tradition of local postmasters singing Gibson a song. Jim Miller, Coachella postmaster, and Bob Mueller, Palm Desert postmaster, sang a welcome song to Gibson, set to the music of "Windy" by The Association.

Gibson was sworn in by John Platt, San Diego-based post office district manager, who said it was a pleasure to attend.

"I was once a postmaster so I share in that glory," he said, adding that postmasters are a tight-knit group and an important one. He also said post offices play an important role in their community and that both are assets to each other.

Many well-wishers were on-hand for the ceremony.

Gibson is married and has five children.
