Chili cook-off added to attractions at California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta

A chili cook-off has been added to the list of attractions at this year's California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta, which opens Friday at the Imperial Valley Expo.

The cook-off will be in the Granite Construction Grandstand Events Center on March 6. Entry forms must be received in the fair office by March 4.

There is $1,750 in cash prizes being offered, including a first place award of $1,000; second place, $500 and third, $250.

Trophies will be awarded for the "People's Choice" award as well as for the best booth.

Although the grounds will be opening at 4 p.m. on the day of the contest, contestants will be able to enter the grounds to set up at 2 p.m. that day.


Preparations can begin at 4 p.m. and there will be a meeting of all contestants at 5p.m.Only propane stoves will be allowed.

Each contestant will be allowed three additional team members in their booth. They must make a minimum of 3 gallons of chili.

Fairgrounds staff will provide tables and chairs for the contestants. Contestants will be responsible for supplying their own utensils, stoves and decorations.
