Many residents of Calexico do not fully understand Measure B. Measure B is not just the grocers vs. Wal-Mart. It is also to protect the community against having more big, ugly, empty buildings to deal with, which is what will happen if Measure B fails to pass.
The current Calexico Wal-Mart is roughly 119,000 square feet. If Measure B fails and Wal-Mart is allowed to build a new super center that would be about double the size of the current one. You could be sure of one thing. There will be one more empty big box in Calexico. There is no room for a 200,000+ square-foot building at its current location.
Wal-Mart would build a new super center at another location with no consideration to what would happen with the big empty building and the surrounding businesses that depend on the traffic generated by current Wal-Mart customers, leaving Calexico residents to deal with it.
