CARLSBAD — Brawley Union High School's Michael Soza and David Villagran each earned spots in the CIF state tournament with third-place finishes at the CIF Masters tournament at Carlsbad High School here Saturday.
Soza finished 4-1 at 105 pounds as did Villagran at 114 pounds to advance to the state meet beginning Friday at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
Five other Imperial Valley wrestlers also placed at the Masters meet but did not advance to state, as only the top three finishers in each weight class move on.
Leading that list was Southwest High's Eddie Conner, who took fourth place at 154 pounds. Brawley's Bobby Myers (147) and Cesar Mendez (127) each placed fifth as did Calexico's Harry Ramirez at 154 pounds and Holtville's 137-pounder Edel Lopez.
