Voice: Mendoza history distorted in letter

February 28, 2002

I am writing this letter in answer to the distorted hate letter you printed by Lee Whittle. First of all Mr. Mendoza has not repeatedly run for sheriff. He ran once and in a field of five he was the second biggest vote-getter, right behind Carter. With the other three eliminated he will most likely be our next sheriff.

Second, he did not sue the county because he lost an election. He sued because he was passed over in a promotion. He sued the county in a discrimination suit and it was proven in court that this had happened. The judge ordered the county to promote him to the position that he was very qualified to have and they also gave him a cash settlement, which he used to build his family a new home.

I agree that we must demand that our candidate be the best qualified and if anyone would bother to check the facts Mr. Mendoza is better qualified to hold this responsible position than our present sheriff. Mendoza is unselfish, dedicated and honest. He has a proven track record of responsible leadership and is well-liked throughout the community.

The morale is at an all time low in our Sheriff's Office. And morale starts at the top. We need a sheriff who will help his people to work together as a team, which is not happening under our present Sheriff.

If you truly want responsible leadership, you want Mr. Mendoza for your next sheriff.
