25-year-old Calexico man nabbed for ‘tagging'

CALEXICO — Police here Thursday nabbed a 25-year-old Calexico man for allegedly "tagging" a shopping center.

Authorities are investigating whether the suspect can be linked to other graffiti that has been plaguing the Kennedy Gardens area of the city.

Israel Barrel Zaragoza was booked into the county jail on suspicion of vandalism. Information on his bail was unavailable this morning.

Zaragoza was arrested at 8:50 p.m. after authorities witnessed a subject reportedly spray-painting letters on the side of a shopping center at the corner of Imperial and Campillo avenues.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said a grant to be shared by the department, county Office of Education, county Probation Department, Calexico Neighborhood House and the Police Department is going to help authorities target such criminal activity.

The $400,000 grant was provided by the state Office of Criminal Justice Planning and is for joint use by local agencies.
