Southwest baseball takes two at tourney

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Southwest High's baseball team won its first two games of the Mojave Tournament on Thursday, dispatching Snowflake 9-8 and Monument Valley 11-0.

Ricky Lopez doubled and singled and drove in four runs against Snowflake and hammered a two-run home run to break a scoreless tie against Monument Valley.

The Eagles play two more games today.

Boys golf

Coachella 160, Southwest 173

COACHELLA — Southwest High's golf team fell to host Coachella Valley on Thursday 160-173.

Bobby Kirby led the Eagles on the PGA West course with a 39, Ty Yturralde shot 40, Tyler Douthitt carded 46 and Bill Skinner added 47.

Southwest (1-1) travels to Desert Hot Springs for a match at 2 p.m. Monday.

Borrego Springs 180, Brawley 237

BORREGO SPRINGS — Brawley Union High's boys golf team saw its record fall to 0-2 Thursday with a 180-237 loss to host Borrego Springs High.


Adam Schmitt led the Wildcats with a 39 at Ram's Hill Country Club. Michael Quick and Garrett Fargo both shot 46 and Brian Mamer added a 49 for Brawley.

On Wednesday, Brawley dropped a 194-209 decision to visiting Temecula Valley at the Del Rio County Club in Brawley. Fargo shot 38, Schmitt had a 39, Mark Miller carded 41, Quick tallied 42 and Mamer added 43.

Brawley plays a match at 3 today against Temecula Valley at Temeku Hills Golf Course.

Brawley Gladiators

HOLTVILLE — Seven members of the Brawley Gladiators won their divisions in the Holtville Take-Down Tournament Saturday.

Taking first place were Daniel Camargo, Nick Torres, Donovin Buck, Jacob Gonzales, Eric Reyes, Paul Villagran and Cortland Bender. For more results see Scoreboard.

BMX racing

SEELEY — More than 120 riders competed Saturday in the Imperial Valley BMX series at the Sunbeam Lake track. There were 31 motos.

The racing program starts at 5 p.m. Saturday with sign-ups. There is also a practice session from 7-8 p.m. Thursdays. For more results see Scoreboard.

SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge

Brawley's Rick Taylor broke down on the fourth lap of the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge last Saturday.

Competing in Class 7, Taylor led by three seconds after two laps. He surrendered the lead on the third lap before breaking down entering the final lap.
