Eagles lose track opener

Southwest High's boys and girls track and field teams fell to visiting Palm Desert on Thursday in the Eagles' season opener, despite Southwest setting two school records.

Jennifer Black won three events and set a school record for the Southwest girls, who lost 71-56. Black's record came in the 100-meter high hurdles, in which she clocked 16.85 seconds. Black won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches and the 300 hurdles in of 54.2.

Rashawna Amos of Southwest also set a school record of 12.27 in the 100-meter dash.

Monica Gamboa won two events for Southwest, the 400 with a 1:06 and the 800 in 2:53. Erica Holmes won the 200 in 28.07.

Jose Luis Salazar won two events for Southwest's boys, who lost 66-61. He won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.27 seconds and the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 10 inches.

Doug Fulp also won two events for the Eagles — the 800 in 2:15 the 1,600 in 5:05. Southwest's Terrance Johnson won the 100 in 11.16. Eric Holmes won the 400 with a 54.6. Brandon Pipkin won the discus with a throw of 120-2. Isaiah Obeso won the 3,200 in 11:40.

Southwest competes next at the City View Invitational on March 9 in Yuma.
