Villagran places at state

STOCKTON — Brawley Union High's David Villagran finished eighth in the CIF state wrestling championships in Stockton.

Villagran posted a 4-3 record competing at 114 pounds. Wildcat teammate Michael Soza went 2-2 at 105 pounds.

Villagran opened the tournament by decisioning Mitchell Conley of Cupertino 12-1. He followed with a 6-0 loss to Logan Ingram of Buchanan. Villagran then shut out Justin Owens of Monterey 13-0.

Villagran decisioned Brian Wantanabe of Vintage 4-0, defeated Sammy Saunders of Northview 8-4, lost to Chad Mendes of Hanford 12-3 and fell to Adam Boeger of Natomas 8-0.

Soza defeated Jonathan McLowe of James Logan in his first match 6-4. He then lost to Brian Osuna of Calvary Chapel 1-0. Soza followed with a pin of Juan Alvarado of Canoga Park at the 2:38 mark and a 3-1 loss to Chris Jaworski of St. Francis.


Girls softball

Southwest 12, Coachella Valley 8

COACHELLA VALLEY — Jessica Conway went four-for-four with a home run and a double Friday to lead Southwest High's girls softball team to a 12-8 win over Coachella Valley. Nicky Cordova was three-for-three with two doubles. Melissa Chavez doubled and singled and Melissa Lerno had a base hit.

Monica Lopez started the game on the mound and did not yield an earned run in three innings. Lerno picked up the win, allowing one earned run on two hits.

Southwest hosts Yuma Catholic at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Holtville 17, Guajome Park 4

HOLTVILLE — Holtville High's girl softball team routed visiting Guajome Park Academy in two games Saturday winning 17-4 and 7-1.

Michelle Strahm allowed one earned run on six hits and three strikeouts in the first game.

Jessica Young yielded one earned run and three hits and had two strikeouts in the second game.

Regan Rothfleisch went three-for-three with four RBI in the first game for Holtville and was three-for-four with five RBI in the second game.

Holtville plays a 3 p.m. game Tuesday at Lincoln Academy in San Diego.

Boys golf

Temecula Valley 204, Brawley 217

TEMECULA — Adam Schmitt and Brian Mamer both shot 42 Friday as Brawley Union High's boys golf team fell to host Temecula Valley 204-217. Mark Miller had a 44 and Michael Quick and Garrett Fargo both carded 45.

Brawley (0-3) hosts Palm Desert at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
