Bulldogs go 5-0 at Mojave tourney

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — Calexico High's baseball team went 5-0 in the Mojave Tournament here to open its season.

The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over host Mojave. J.P. Gonzalez was the winning pitcher as he went all seven innings, allowing one earned run while striking out eight. Damien Lopez stroked a base hit and drove in both runs.

Calexico followed with a 14-3 win over Camp Verde, Ariz.. Hector Sanchez went the distance, fanning six in five innings.

The Bulldogs next edged Chinle, another Arizona team. George Luis was the winning pitcher as he struck out five in five innings. Calexico scored all its runs in the first inning.

Calexico then defeated an Arizona state championship team from last year, Coconinos, 3-1. Again the Bulldogs scored all of their runs in the first and then had to hold on to the lead. Lopez went the distance, allowing two hits and fanning six.


The Bulldogs wrapped up the tourney with a 6-4 win over Fountain Hills of Arizona. Carlos Ortiz picked up the win in relief of Enok Madrigal. Calexico scored the two winning runs in the top of the fifth, one on an overthrow of third base by the first baseman and the other on a errant pickoff throw to third by the catcher. Lopez went two-for-three with two RBI.

Christian 7, Imperial 2

IMPERIAL — The Imperial High baseball team dropped to 1-1 with a 7-2 loss to Christian here Saturday.

Imperial was held to three hits by Christian pitcher Brian Schroeder, who picked up the win in throwing a complete game with 16 strikeouts. Schroeder is the son of former Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Jay Schroeder.

Picking up the hits for the Tigers were Art Garcia, Brian Seeger and Eddie Martinez, who recorded an RBI.

Seeger took the loss for Imperial, giving up three earned runs, five hits, four walks and striking out two.

The Tigers will play at Madison High School in San Diego at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
