E.C. woman takes 3 prizes at fair contests

Mona Locher of El Centro took home three consecutive prizes over the weekend in the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta's one-day contests.

Locher's "Squeal with Joy Cookies" took second place in the favorite drop cookies contest on opening day. She followed it with a win Saturday with her "Caramel Apple Ice Cream" in the homemade ice cream contest and her "Peach Berry Pie" took first place in Sunday's fruit pies contest.

Dianna Randolph won in the favorite drop cookies contest with her "Crispy Oat Drops," while Katharine Verwer took third with her "Grandma Currier's Snowball Cookies."

Anna Brinkman placed second in the homemade ice cream contest with her "Tuti Fruiti Ice Cream" and Pauline McConnell won third with "Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream."


Randolph took second place in Sunday's fruit pies contest with "Country Apple Pie" and Marianne Pfister won third with "Apricot Custard Pie."

The one-day contests are being held each day of the fair, which continues through Sunday. To enter, all contestants have to do is appear with their entries and the recipes at the fair's main gate by the entry deadline each day.

Contest entry deadlines are 6 tonight through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The contests are in the Lifestyles building. Prizes are: first place, $50; second place, $25, and third place, $15. Each contestant also will receive free entry to the fair the day of the contest.

Contests for the remainder of the fair include favorite pasta dish at 6 tonight, favorite chips and salsa, 6 p.m. Tuesday; favorite cheese cake, 6 p.m. Wednesday; favorite breakfast dish, 6 p.m. Thursday; Imperial Valley salad, 6 p.m. Friday; favorite crock pot dish, 6 p.m. Saturday, and favorite bar cookies, 2 p.m. Sunday.
