LA QUINTA — Led by its singles players, Southwest High's boys tennis team pulled out a 10-8 win over host La Quinta on Monday.
It was a hectic day, Eagles coach Genaro Piniero said.
"We barely had a team, we barely had a van, we barely made it to the match on time and we barely won," he said.
In singles action, Southwest No. 1 John Bonano faced off against Ian Walters, Quan Lundberg and Joe Kitagawa and won his three sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 6-1. The Eagles' No. 2 netter, Bobby Romero, finished 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, and Southwest's No. 3 player, Tim Walter, made his debut winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, Southwest's No. 1 team of Neil Stickles and Chris Thomas squared off against Matt Black and Ryan Ellis, Kyle Sellers and Brett Miller, and Ryan Williams and Luke Ericson, scoring 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Eagles' No. 2 tandem of Glen Shumard and Jared Kaye had results of 5-7, 4-6, 4-6 and Southwest's No. 3 duo of Idreese Suliman and Kale Park went 2-6, 5-7, 6-3.
