Calexico Mayor Victor Carrillo toppled incumbent Tony Tirado for the Board of Supervisors District 1 seat in an unofficial final count early today.

Carrillo had 2,155 votes for 52.57 percent over Tirado's 1,910 votes, or 46.60 percent, as of 1:48 a.m. Wednesday, with 100 percent of District 1 precincts reporting. The difference in the race was 245 votes.

Tirado led all supervisorial candidates in campaign fund-raising, collecting $23,475. Carrillo raised the next highest amount at $13,371.

County Registrar of Voters Dolores Provencio said absentee ballots still need to be counted before an official result can be published. She said she did not know how many absentee ballots needed to be counted or when the results would be counted.

"My campaign was to give Calexico better representation and apparently our message got across," Carrillo said after hearing the election results.

He said he tips his hat to Tirado and wants to thank his campaign committee and manager, John Moreno.

"I'll continue to be a councilman and continue to give 100 percent," Carrillo said.

He will take office in January 2003.
