CALEXICO — A 23-year old Calexico resident who was shot five times Monday and airlifted to University of California San Diego Medical Center was still listed in critical condition today, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Julio Perez was gunned down in the 500 block of Grant Street about 6:30 Monday evening. It is thought by police that the shooting was part of a gang-related or drug dispute.

Calexico police Sgt. Armando Marquez, in charge of the investigative unit for the Calexico department, said his unit has several officers working on the case and following multiple leads.

Marquez also said apparent lead on the weapon used in the shooting, thought to be a handgun, proved to be a "dead end" when followed up by investigators Tuesday evening.
