El Centro resident Andy Horne appears to have won re-election to the Division 1 seat on the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors in unofficial results.

There remains an unknown number of ballots to be counted, however.

Horne garnered 8,419 votes, or 62.18 percent. Challenger John Hernandez, also an El Centro resident, grabbed 5,040 votes, or 37.23 percent.

"I'm gratified for the support I received," Horne said. "I look forward to the next four years."

Hernandez said he knew going into the election it would be a battle and that he will continue to seek opportunities to serve the community.

"I feel good about the results," he said. "I'm glad I'm still willing to serve and there are people out there willing to support me."

Horne led from the outset, with early returns giving him as much as 79 percent of the vote, but Hernandez gained steadily throughout the long process that ended in the early hours of this morning.

Horne will begin serving his second four-year term in December.
