>>50 years ago — Search planes, led by the county sheriff's "aero squadron," flew over the Puente Hills and the San Bernardino County area looking for a plane with four aboard missing on a mercy flight from Needles. It was identified as a high-wing monoplane.

>>40 years ago — Holtville Union High School Principal Edward van Dam, 41, will succeed J.R. Warne as Brawley Union High School District's superintendent-principal. He accepted a three-year contract. Warne, a member of the screening committee, said 32 applications were received.

>>30 years ago — A combination of beautiful Imperial Valley sunny weather, an almost-packed grandstand for the bicycle races and many other attractions saw the first day of the 43 annual California Mid-Winter Fair exceed last year's first-day attendance by several thousand.

>>20 years ago — Traditionally the California Mid-Winter Fair closes with a spectacular Mexican festival with a singer, dancers and roving mariachis. Sunday, the final day of the successful 10-day run is no exception as Lorenzo de Monteclaro, one of Mexico's outstanding recording artists and film star, will be featured on the grandstand at 6 p.m. Monteclaro, considered among the top 10 in Mexican ranchero music, has recorded 38 albums and has been in several films.
