In a race that pitted two Calexico residents head-to-head for the Division 5 seat on the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors, the incumbent won re-election.

The results are still unofficial, however.

Rudy Maldonado led all night and received 8,018 votes, or 59.37 percent.

Calexico City Councilman Gilbert Grijalva took 5,377 votes, or 39.81 percent.

Maldonado will serve a second four-year term on the board. He could not be reached for comment.

Grijalva thanked his volunteers and supporters for their hard work, and said it's time to move onward and upward.

"The voters spoke. We respect that decision," he said. "We wish Mr. Maldonado the best."

Grijalva said the race was a clean one.

"We'll be back," he said.

Maldonado led the whole evening, pulling more than 60 percent of the vote until the end when he dropped to 58 percent.

There are an unknown number of absentee and provisional ballots to be counted.
