Southwest thrashes El Capitan

LAKESIDE — The Southwest High boys tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 17-1 victory over El Capitan here Tuesday.

Leading Southwest were No. 1 singles player Ken Walter, No. 2 singles John Bonano and No. 3 singles Bobby Romero, all sweeping their sets. Walter won 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, Bonano was victorious 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 and Romero won 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Neil Stickles and Chris Thomas for Southwest won all three sets 6-1.

The brothers Bravo, Hector and Hiram, No. 2 doubles for the Eagles, won 6-0, 6-4, 6-4.

Idreese Suliman and Jake Park, No. 3 doubles for Southwest, won two sets 6-0 and 6-1.

The Eagles host Desert Hot Springs at 3:15 today.

Coronado 14, Central 4

CORONADO — The Central Union High boys tennis team kicked off its season on a sour note, losing 14-4 to Coronado here Tuesday.


Scoring for Central were No. 1 singles player Carlos Olmedo, who won two sets 6-1, and No. 3 singles player Seth Vogel, who won a set 6-4.

Jon Harmon and Frankie Esquer, No. 1 doubles for the Spartans, earned a point with a 6-4 set win.

Almost earning points for Central was No. 2 singles player Octavio Cortez, who fell narrowly short twice at 6-7 and 5-7.

The Spartans play at Coachella at 4 p.m. Thursday.
