SALTON CITY — A 17-year-old Salinas boy died as a result of a single-vehicle rollover accident about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 86 just south of here.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol states five people were in a sport-utility vehicle traveling south on Highway 86 just south of Air Park Drive when the driver, Humberto Barrios, 27, of Gilroy, fell asleep and the vehicle drifted into the center median.

Barrios tried to steer back on to the roadway and lost control. The vehicle overturned and the 17-year-old boy was ejected. The boy was not wearing his seat belt. He died at the scene of the accident.

Jeannette Gomez, 26, of Gilroy, another passenger, sustained major injuries. She was wearing her seat belt, as was Barrios, who sustained minor injuries.

The other two passengers, two girls, one 16 of Salinas and the other age 7 of Gilroy, sustained minor injuries. They were wearing their seat belts.

Gomez was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. A Pioneers spokesman said she was transferred to Kaiser Zion Hospital in San Diego about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A spokesman from Kaiser Zion Hospital said she was in critical condition this morning.
