Spartans thump Tigers, Vikes in tri-meet

The Central Union High boys and girls track teams won a tri-meet against Holtville and Imperial high schools in El Centro on Thursday.

The Central girls totaled 73 points followed by Holtville with 40 and Imperial with 28.

The Spartan boys ripped through the competition, scoring 122 points, followed by Imperial with 16 and Holtville with 11.

Central and Holtville will compete in the Yuma Invitational Saturday and Imperial will compete at Southwest in El Centro at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.


Central 11, Coachella 7

The Central Union High boys tennis team scored an 11-7 victory over Coachella in El Centro on Thursday.

Leading Central was No. 1 singles player Frankie Esquer, who swept all three of his sets.

The No. 1 doubles team of Octavio Cortez and John Harmon also had a sweep for the Spartans (1-1 overall).

Central will play at Valhalla High in El Cajon at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.


Boys golf

Southwest 155, Yuma Catholic 204

YUMA — Bobby Kirby shot a 37 Thursday to lead Southwest High's boys golf team to a 155-204 win over host Yuma Catholic at the Desert Hills Country Club.

Tyler Douthitt shot 38 for the Eagles and Arek Legarra and Ty Yturralde both scored 40.

Southwest (3-1) hosts Indio at 2 p.m. Monday at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort near Holtville.


Brawley 9, Cathedral City 4

INDIO — David Santana went three-for-three with a home run and three RBI Thursday as Brawley Union High's baseball team topped Cathedral City 9-4 in the Desert Classic.

Brandon Burnett and Matt Smith both slugged two-run home runs and Mitchell Ruiz went three-for-four.

The Wildcats play at 6 tonight in Indio.


Holtville 8, Calipatria 0

CALIPATRIA — Lauren Huyler allowed just two hits and struck out eight Thursday at Holtville High's girls softball team blanked Calipatria 8-0.

Josie Silva went two-for-two with two RBIs for Holtville and Shelli Strahm also had two hits.

Holtville (5-0) plays a doubleheader at Coachella Valley starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Calipatria (3-1) plays at Imperial at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
