CAMP PENDLETON — Marines and sailors from the 1st Marine Division will conduct their annual Desert Scimitar exercise April 22-May 3.
The exercise is done to test the command and control capabilities of the 1st Marine Division command element by evaluating its ability to execute contingency plans for a major theater war.
The division will conduct most of this exercise off Department of Defense land starting at Twentynine Palms and continuing through DesertCenter, Blythe, PaloVerde andCibola.A river-crossing will be conducted over the Colorado River and ending at the Yuma Proving Ground.
The entire exercise will bring an influx of 600 vehicles and 2,700 Marines to all sections of the route.
Those participating in the exercise will be traveling along private, county, state, irrigationcanal roads and military installations from Twentynine Palms to the Yuma Proving Ground.
