CALIPATRIA — Police are investigating the death of an inmate Saturday at Calipatria State Prison as a possible homicide.

An inmate's body was discovered around 8 a.m. but he appeared to have been dead for some time, County Coroner Investigator Deputy Gary Hayes said.

A special homicide task force, made up of officers from several area agencies, was dispatched to the scene, sheriff's Sgt. John Lemon said.

Hayes would not say what the cause of death was because it is still under investigation. He said the man was not stabbed, beaten or shot and did not die from a drugs overdose.

Hayes said the man was white and about 40 years old.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Previous inmate deaths at the prison include Eflong U. McKelvy in December, Eddie Eugene Clark in November 2000, Steve Brown in July 2000 and Abe Mendibles in April 1998. All were stabbed to death.
