Transient killed by car

CALEXICO — A 44-year-old man who police described as a transient was killed Sunday when he was struck by a car while trying to cross a street.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr identified the man as Jerman Antonio Cabrera. The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in the 500 block of Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

According to witness reports, Cabrera was crossing west to east on Cesar Chavez when he apparently decided to turn back west.

As he did he walked into the path of a car driven by a 17-year-old male from Mexicali, whose identity was not released because he is a juvenile arrested for driving without a license.

Neujahr said the accident does not appear to have been the fault of the driver. The youth was taken into custody and released to his parents.

Cabrera, who suffered trauma to his upper body and head, died at the scene.

The case remained under investigation.
