sadberry hurls hornets to victory

SAN DIEGO — Daniel Sadberry was sterling on the mound Tuesday as he helped pitch Calipatria High's baseball team to a 10-6 win over host Lutheran.

The Hornets trailed 6-5 after three innings but put away the game with four runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Sadberry struck out 11 before being lifted for one batter in the bottom of the fourth. Coach Tom Cato lifted him for freshman southpaw Don Schiller, who came in and got Lutheran's big gun to ground out, after he had doubled and tripled earlier in the game.

Sadberry came back in the fifth and fanned five of the next seven batters.

Vontray Taylor had a couple of hits and stole five bases. Sergio Flores went three-for-three and stole two bases.

Calipatria (1-1) hosts Calvary Christian at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Horizon 8, Imperial 7

SAN DIEGO — The Imperial High baseball team lost an 8-7 heartbreaker in eight innings to Horizon in Patriot tournament action here Tuesday.


Taking the loss on the mound for Imperial was Aaron Hartsock, who went 2 1/3 innings.

Leading the Tiger offense were Brenden Lopez going 3-for-5, Brian Seeger going 4-for-5 and Julian Lopez going 2-for-3 with a home run.

Imperial (2-3 overall) hosts Bishop's at 7 p.m. Friday.

Vincent Memorial 4,

Calvary Christian 1

CALEXICO — The Vincent Memorial High baseball team kicked off Citrus League action here Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over Calvary Christian.

The win improved Vincent's season record to 1-1 and was the team's first victory in a year.

Earning the win was Richie Del Rio, who went 4 1/3 innings on the mound. Federico Gomez closed the game by going 2 1/3 and picking up the save.

Leading the Scots' offense was Nicolas Santos, who went 1-for-1 with a run and three stolen bases.

Vincent hosts West Shores at 3:30 today.

Indio 10, Southwest 0

INDIO — Southwest High's baseball team ran into a buzz-saw Tuesday afternoon, falling to host Indio 10-0 in five innings.

Indio's Steve Moraga tossed a no-hitter at the Eagles, striking out 11. He did not walk a batter.

"He totally dominated us," Southwest coach Mickey Carter said of Moraga.

Southwest competes Thursday in the Cibola Tournament in Yuma, first facing Mountain View of the Phoenix area at 11:30 a.m.

Boys golf

Holtville 183, Yuma Catholic 184

YUMA — Stephen Hawk shot a 39 as Holtville High's boys golf team edged host Yuma Catholic on Tuesday 183-184.

Kyle Goodsell carded a 46, Caleb Sandeen shot 47 and Coby Dry added a 51 for Holtville.

Holtville (4-3) plays again at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Julian.

Central 210, Coachella 227

COACHELLA — Ivan Haro shot a 2-under-par 34 to lead the Central Union High boys golf team to a 210-227 win over Coachella here Tuesday.

Mario Luna and Beau Carson followed Haro with 41s and Chris Robb added a 44 for the Spartans (2-2 overall). Adam Moeller rounded things out by shooting a 50 for Central.

The Spartans play at Bonita Vista in Chula Vista at 3 today.

Brawley 190, Julian 221

Taylor Smith shot a 46 Tuesday to lead Brawley Union High's boys golf team to a 190-221 win over Julian at Del Rio Country Club.

Stephan Gibson shot 47, Preston Soto carded 48 and William Owen added a 49.

Brawley (3-5) hosts Coachella at 2 today at Del Rio.
