Armed man barricades himself inside Calexico residence with estranged wife

March 13, 2002|STAFF REPORT

CALEXICO — A man reportedly despondent over separating from his wife barricaded himself inside his home here with a shotgun Tuesday.

Police negotiated with the man until he came out of the house. They then took him into protective custody.

The man's identity was not released.

The case started about 1 p.m. when police responded to a call in the 2100 block of Coyote Avenue. Authorities were called by the man's wife, who was inside the house with him. Reportedly, the man had fired one round from his shotgun.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said police negotiated with the man for a half hour before he put down the shotgun and walked out of the house.

His wife was not harmed, and Neujahr said the round that was fired was a blank.

The man remained in custody today.
