>>50 years ago — A contract turning over operations of the All-American Canal to the Imperial Irrigation District will be approved next week, Interior Department sources said today.

>>40 years ago — Four Brawley entries have been received to date in the Miss Dodger and Miss Angel contests. They are Miss Paula Williams, Miss Edna Trimm, Miss Pat Kerner and Mrs. Lucille Torbett.

>>30 years ago — The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has announced bids will open April 14 in Boulder City, Nev., for drilling of an underground well in an experiment program as a possible source of irrigation for the Imperial Valley. A well about one-mile deep will be drilled near East Mesa, 10 miles east of Holtville.

>>20 years ago — A violent thunderstorm, which included the sightings of at least two funnel clouds, struck the Valley on Friday afternoon, dumped 1.1 inches of rain along the Mexican border and caused massive flooding in parts of Calexico and Mexicali. The thunderstorm, accompanied by half-inch hail, was blamed for the collapse of the Calexico Chronicle building and a fatal air crash in Mexicali, the only reported storm-related fatality.
