QUESTION: When are they going to put covered benches like they have in El Centro at the bus stops in Brawley? It's getting hot. I see bus riders sitting on the ground or pavement. Not everybody has a car. — Bus Rider, Brawley

Brawley is running a little late but it should have its covered benches by mid-summer.

The city engineer is working on the specifications now. When that's done, the city will call for bids, then the City Council will have to pick one and award a contract. It all takes time.

Every incorporated area in the county received a state grant to install sheltered benches at bus stops.

It's another incentive to lure us out of our cars. The incentives may be working. Valleyites are taking 29,000 trips a month on the Imperial County Transit System. It's a transportation bargain.

You can ride from Bombay Beach to Winterhaven for $1. So what do you do when you get to Winterhaven besides go to the Indian casino?

We tried to plan a trip from Holtville to Winterhaven. Alas, the bus to Winterhaven doesn't stop in Holtville. If you want to go, you have to catch the bus at 5:40 a.m. in El Centro. The bus returns to El Centro around 6:30 p.m. So what do you do all day in Winterhaven? Go to the Indian casino — at 8 in the morning? That doesn't sound like fun! But it would be an inexpensive trip if you don't gamble.

QUESTION: There seems to be a California law that a landlord may evict a tenant for no reason at all. My family moved into an apartment Feb. 11. On March 2 we paid our rent, no problem. On March 6 a man knocked on our door with an eviction notice.

Is this a cruel scam? The landlord needs some money to pay an overdue bill, he rents to a tenant and a month or two later, he evicts the family due to their ethnic background.

Can you help me and my family on this matter? What can we do to stop this? We can't afford to keep moving. — Evicted, Brawley

Talk to your landlord and find out why he wants you to move. If you can't convince him to change his mind, there's nothing you can do.

The law permits a landlord to evict a tenant with 30-days notice for any reason. It permits you to move (without penalty) with 30-days notice.

You get 30-days notice if you pay your rent one month at a time. If you pay your rent week by week, he can order you to move in seven days.

You didn't say why he might evict you due to your ethnic background. That would be against the law. If you think that's the reason, call the California Fair Employment and Housing Department at (800) 233-3212.

BACK TO MEMORY LANE — What great contributions on the drive-in movie question last week. Now that readers have their trivia caps on, how about this one? I have been craving a Brawley Fountain Suicide. It was a soft drink made by mixing different soft drink flavors. I would love to try to match it. The Brawley Fountain Suicide was the ultimate! — Thirsty, Brawley

We don't know if it's the same drink but the snack bar at the Holtville Little League park used to concoct a drink by mixing more or less equal portions of all the soft drinks on hand, usually six flavors.

The kids called it a "suicide" since such a potent drink was thought to be dangerous. But, OK, readers, what's the recipe for a Brawley Fountain Suicide?
