>>50 years ago — Evan T. Hewes, executive superintendent of the Imperial Irrigation District, said Friday he feels certain Interior Secretary Oscar Chapman will sign a contract giving the district control of the All-American Canal.

>>40 years ago — Eighteen persons have declarations of candidacy for 10 county positions, the county clerk's office reported Wednesday. At least three others are expected to file before the March 30 deadline.

>>30 years ago — Cesar Chavez's statement that he will mount a boycott against lettuce and strike against California growers strikes most Imperial Valley people as somewhat ludicrous in its timing. Claude Finnell, county agricultural commissioner, noted Imperial Valley lettuce is in its cleanup period and Salinas lettuce will not begin until about May 1.

>>20 years ago — A series of explosive fireworks Sunday morning across the border caused the Calexico Police Department to be inundated with calls from people wondering what was happening. Calexico police Sgt. Mario Sanchez said some 70 people called police after Mexicali began celebrating its 79th birthday anniversary by shooting off booming fireworks at 6 a.m.
