Eagle boys roll to tri-meet win

Southwest High's boys track and field team won 11 of 15 events in a tri-meet with Imperial and Yuma Catholic on Thursday.

The Eagles scored 97 points to Imperial's 45 and Yuma Catholic's 16.

Leading the Southwest boys (2-0 overall) was Devon Hood, who won four events. He won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 9 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 6 inches. He won the 800 with a 2:07 clocking and he anchored the winning 4x400 relay team, which timed 3:56.

Southwest's Eric Holmes won the 400 (55.9) and ran on the 4x400 relay team. The Eagles' Terrance Johnson won the 100 (11.44) and the 200 (23.55). Other winners for Southwest include Stephen Gastellum in the 300 hurdles (47.1), Brandon Pipkin in the discus (123-4), Justin Ernest in the shot put (40-6) and Isaiah Obeso in the 1,600 (11:40).

Southwest's girls (2-0) won 10 of 15 events to finish with 87 points. Yuma Catholic garnered 37 and Imperial had 33.


Monica Gamboa won four events. She won the 400 (1:12) and the 800 (2:34), and she ran on the victorious 4x100 (53.22) and 4x400 (4:37) relay teams. Also running on both relay teams were Tasha Ernest, Erica Holmes and Roshanna Amos.

Amos won the 100 (12.57) and 200 (26.58). Jennifer Eyer won the 1,500 (6:24).

Southwest's Jennifer Black won the 100 hurdles (17.02), the high jump (5-0) and the 300 hurdles (50.9).

Southwest competes next in the Central Invitational in El Centro on Saturday. Imperial (boys and girls both 0-2) hosts Mountain Empire and Julian at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.



Coachella 66, Holtville 64

COACHELLA — Nina Rivas won three events Thursday for Holtville High's girls track and field team, which lost to host Coachella 66-64.

Rivas won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, the triple jump with a 29-8 mark and the long jump with a leap of 13-6 for the Viking girls (1-2 overall).

Rachel Hernandez won the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 9 seconds and the 800 with a 2:41 clocking.

Liz Robinson won the 1,600 with a 6:02 and the 3,200 with a 13:26.

Eric Cueto won two events for the Viking boys (0-3), who fell to Coachella 105-26. Cueto won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 inch and the discus with a 114-4.


Mountain View 11, Southwest 7

YUMA — Southwest High's baseball team fell to Mountain View of Phoenix 11-7 in the opening round of the Cibola Tournament. The Eagles play Las Vegas today.

Ricky Lopez crunched a three-run home run for Southwest. Carlos Ainza hammered a two-run single and a double. Ernie Silva and Brandon Armendariz both went three-for-four for Southwest (4-3).

Central 4, Kofa 3

Central 3, Lake Havasu 1

YUMA — Central Union High won its opening two games in the Cibola Tournament, downing Kofa 4-3 and Lake Havasu 3-1. The Spartans play again this afternoon against Chaparral of Las Vegas.

Leo Ibarra earned the win against Kofa. He scattered four hits, walked four and struck out one in seven innings.

Dan Gonzalez went the distance for Central (5-0) against Lake Havasu, yielding seven hits.

Boys golf

Holtville 364, Julian 421

JULIAN — Stephen Hawk was low medalist with an 81 Thursday as Holtville High's boys golf team tripped host Julian 364-421 in an 18-hole match at Warner Springs.

Caleb Sanden shot 85 for the Vikings, Adam Durant carded 97 and Jared Smith added 101.

Holtville (5-3) faces Calexico and Calipatria at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Barbara Worth Golf Resort.
