Brawley swims to victory

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High boys and girls swim teams remained undefeated on the season with victories over Serra High School here Friday.

The Brawley girls improved to 3-0 with a 118-48 thumping over Serra and the Wildcat boys upped their mark to 2-0-1 winning 82-69.

Leading the Brawley girls were Jennifer Cardenas and Brooke Pace each with two individual victories.

Cardenas took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 31.91 seconds and first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.13.

Pace was victories in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.78, which was good enough for a CIF San Diego Section consideration time, and also took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.83.


Also getting individual wins for Brawley were Tracy King in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:14.99, Natalia Cardenas in the 100 freestyle (1:00.92) and Stephanie Luckey in the 500 freestyle in 6:16.35.

Along with the individual victories, the Wildcat girls also walked away with three relay wins.

Luckey, Pace, Jennifer Cardenas and Lauren Roberts took first in the 200 medley relay in 2:03.91. Roberts, Denae Smith, King and Marianne Wenzel won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.13. Rounding things out were sisters Jennifer and Natalia Cardenas, who with Pace and King won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:10.82.

On the boys' side, Norwegian exchange student Petter Malvik took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.59, which was a school record, and also won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.40.

Also getting individual wins were Robbie Overstreet in the 50 freestyle (25.06), Julian Tamayo in the 100 butterfly (1:17.60), Mike Simms in the 100 freestyle in 1:04.46 and Ethan Schoch in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.63.

Malvik, Schoch and Overstreet teamed with Tim Dowden to win the 200 medley relay in 2:02.07.

Brawley hosts Central Union High at 4 p.m. Thursday.
