CYA detainees apprehended

WESTMORLAND — Police here, with the help of Calipatria police and the California Youth Authority officers, apprehended two CYA detainees who escaped while on a work detail here Saturday.

A press release from the Westmorland Police Department states officers received a call about 11 a.m. Saturday regarding two escaped CYA detainees from the CYA facility in El Centro.

The detainees had been on a work detail on the 300 block of North Center Street in Westmorland before the escape.


CYA Supervising Parolee Agent Kevin Ide said the two, Othon Hernandez, 18, of San Bernardino and Stephen Alvira, 20, of Adelanto were helping paint St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Westmorland when they escaped.

The two were apprehended about 1:45 p.m. in the 200 block of North Center Street.

Ide said the two were serving 90 days in a "restructuring" drug and alcohol program as part of their juvenile court commitment.

The two will have another juvenile court hearing to determine if they will be confined for a longer amount of time as a result of their escape.

The press release stated the community played a key role in the apprehension of the escapees by calling authorities to inform them of the whereabouts of Hernandez and Alvira.
