Pair of haystack blazes may be arson

March 18, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — Fire crews here were called to two haystack fires this morning, both of which investigators think may have been arson.

Brawley Fire Department Capt. Jessie Zendejas said a fire was reported on Mead Road about 1:20 a.m.

Zendejas said fire crews discovered two separate haystack fires. The first was on Mead Road between Bryant Road and Dogwood Road, the second at 4175 Dogwood Road.

The fire on Mead involved a haystack that had been placed next to the road.

The second, on Dogwood, was at Harmony Agricultural Products, Inc.

The haystack on Mead Road was not engulfed when fire crews arrived, said Zendejas, so firefighters were able to save a small pile of the hay.

The haystack at the business was engulfed when crews arrived, added Zendejas.

He said at this point investigators think the fires are arsons.

Both fires were still burning as of presstime this morning. Zendejas said firefighters will let the fires burn out.

Imperial County Fire Department crews assisted in fighting both blazes.
