El Centro and Calexico citizens accused of "having a big heart for Jerry's kids" raised more than $50,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by volunteering to be "arrested and serve time" in a mock jail at Pablito's of the Desert restaurant in El Centro on March 12.
More than 70 local "jailbirds" volunteered in the MDA fund raiser.
Caroline Maness of El Centro was the top "bail raiser" with $2,250.
Said El Centro Fire Chief Charles Beard, who also was a "jailbird": "I think the community came out in full support for MDA, and the citizens should be congratulated for helping in finding the cause and cure for this crippling disease."
Sponsors of the fund raiser included Cellular One, Direct Auto Plaza, Radio Shack and Pablito's.
The MDA annually funds more than 400 scientific teams seeking treatments for neuromuscular diseases.
