Calexico man, 33, allegedly wields box cutter at Wal-Mart employee

CALEXICO — Police here arrested a 33-year-old Calexico man after he allegedly brandished a box cutter at a Wal-Mart loss prevention agent.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said police arrested Hernan Castro Cortez after he chased a Wal-Mart loss prevention agent who was trying to apprehend him for shoplifting.

Neujahr said Cortez and Gilbert Rubio Vasquez, 21, also of Calexico, allegedly tried to shoplift some items at Wal-Mart, 656 Yourman Road in Calexico, around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

A Wal-Mart loss prevention agent approached the two in the parking lot. The two refused to cooperate with the agent.

Neujahr said Cortez then took out a box cutter and threatened the agent with it. Cortez also chased the agent through the parking lot but the agent was able to escape.


Neujahr said Cortez then fled on foot across Highway 111 heading toward the Calexico 10 Theatres.

Other Wal-Mart loss prevention agents followed Cortez until they lost him near some industrial buildings.

Rubio stayed in a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Cortez was found by police hiding in a field. He was arrested on counts of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon and conspiracy to commit a crime.

He was being held in the county jail today with bail set at $50,000.

Rubio was arrested for conspiracy to commit a crime. He was being held in the county jail today. His bail amount was not available this morning.
