Wildcats go 2-1 at tourney

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School softball team wrapped up play in the Montgomery tournament here Saturday by going 2-1 on the final day.

Brawley picked up a 15-0 victory over Mar Vista to kick off the day and followed with a 3-2 nine-inning win over Coronado. The Wildcats lost their final game of the day, 3-2 to Marian Catholic.

Against Mar Vista, Leighan Sudduth notched the victory on the mound, giving up only two hits. Ruby Auren led the Brawley offense recording a grand slam.

Stephanie Murray picked up the win in the Wildcats' 3-2 victory over Coronado giving up only one earned run, two hits and striking out six. Sudduth earned the save by giving up no runs and no hits in two innings.


Reggie Horta scored the game-winning run in the ninth on a single by Erin Rutherford.

Against Marian, Murray took the loss and Rutherford finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Brawley (6-3).

The Wildcats play at Southwest in El Centro at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Southwest at Mojave Invitational

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz., — The Southwest High softball team dropped to 3-4 on the season with a 1-3 performance at the Mojave Invitational here Saturday.

The team's only victory of the tournament came Friday as it downed Green Valley High School of Arizona 2-1. Melissa Lerno picked up the win on the mound.

Leading the Southwest offense in the tournament were Jessica Conway, who recorded a grand slam, and Nikki Cordova, who jacked a solo bomb.
