Voice: They get their contract and they still complain

March 19, 2002

Here we go. For the last few years all we heard was that the teachers in the El Centro Elementary School District were underpaid and overworked. Now they have a great new contract that gave them raises, back pay and the perks they wanted.

As expected, we are now hearing rumbles from some that they might have to raise their teaching standards. This comes from the announcement of the implementation of the new math program. This is a state-mandated program that can only benefit our children.

The complaint comes not from the program but that the school board chose the program. That's why they were elected.

As a former husband and former son-in-law (there is a God!) of two teachers, I learned firsthand that calamitous people will always complain about any changes. Instead of trying to work with a new program, they will blame the administration and school board for adding more work. Don't get me wrong. The majority of teachers are great, overworked saints. Let's give this new program a try.

As to the obese comment, give our kids the education and they will learn to count calories. There's already enough skinny kids around that can't add.
