WESTMORLAND — City Councilman Rumaldo Marquez and Mayor Henry Halcon participated in their last meeting as council members Wednesday.

New councilmen Henry D. Graham, Thomas "Bud" Landrum and Victor M. Sanchez will be inducted during the next meeting April 3.

Councilman John Makin ran for re-election in the March elections, as did Halcon. Makin was re-elected and Halcon was not. Marquez did not seek re-election.

A fourth council seat was left vacant when City Councilman Thomas Marquez resigned shortly after the terrorist attacks on this nation in September. Thomas Marquez was put on on-call status by the U.S. Air Force, which prevented him from attending council meetings. His term had two years remaining, which will be filled by Sanchez.

In other city business, the council agreed to seek a grant that would be used to erect more streetlights in the city.

The grant from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development provides $300,000 to small cities with public works projects.

Richard Randsell of The Holt Group in El Centro, which consults with the city of Westmorland on various civic issues, said the city has decided to use the funding for streetlights.
