The Central Union and Calexico high school track and field teams split their Imperial Valley League opener in El Centro on Thursday, with the Central boys winning 98-29 and the Calexico girls downing the Spartans 76-51.

Leading the Central boys was J.D. Gaddis, who took the 110-meter hurdles in 15.88 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 41.99.

Also getting wins for the Spartans were Anthony Hellum in the 100 meters (11.2), Robert Guieb in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 9 seconds, Arturo Platero in the 200 meters (25.68) and Jarrell Henderson in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. Also for Central, Anthony Sabal won the long jump with a 20-7, Christian Garcia took the shot put with a 41-2 and Oscar Garcia won the discus with a 115-11.

Henderson, Sabal and Hellum teamed with Eric Henderson to win the 4x100-meter relay in 44.8 and Jarrell Henderson hooked up with Andrew Valdez and the brothers Guieb, Robert and Felix, to win the 4x400 in 4:28.15.


Winning for the Calexico boys were Mike Padilla in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes flat and the 3,200 meters in 11:24 and Chris Ramsey in the triple jump with a 41-2.

On the girls side, Calexico was led by Donna Garnica, who won the high jump with a 4-4 and the long jump with a 14-7. Melanie Hernandez also won two events, taking the 100 in 13.37 and the 200 in 28.82. Alicia Torres won the 400 in 1:02.93, Alma Ovanda was victorious in the 800 in 2:44 and Magda Navarro won the discus with a toss of 73 feet.

Winning for Central were Erica Camacho taking the 1,600 in 5:51 and the 3,200 in 12:35.11. Jocelyn Taylor also won two events for the Spartans in the 100 hurdles in 19.08 and the triple jump in 29-11.

Diane Johnson won the 300 hurdles in 53.20 and Sonia Ramos took the shot put with a 28-10.

Central will compete in the Eastlake Relays in Chula Vista starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Calexico will host Southwest at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Boys golf

Holtville 169, Calexico 215,

Calipatria 253

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High golf team defeated Calexico and Calipatria high schools in a tri-meet at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort here Thursday.

Holtville finished with a team score of 169 followed by Calexico with a 215 and Calipatria with a 253.

Medalists for Holtville were Steven Hawk and Colby Drye with 41s followed by Caleb Sandin with a 42 and Jared Smith with a 45.

Edgar Ugarte led Calexico with a 49 and Russell Fisher shot a 59 to lead Calipatria.

Calexico (1-2) will play at 1 p.m. April 10 at Brawley and Calipatria (0-5) plays at 2:15 p.m. April 11 at Julian.

Brawley 317, Steele Canyon 345

BRAWLEY — Garrett Fargo shot a two-over-par 70 Thursday to lead Brawley Union High's boys golf team to a 317-345 win over visiting Steele Canyon in an 18-hole match at the Del Rio Country Club.

Adam Schmitt carded 77, Michael Quick hit 83 and Ryan Mamer added 85 for Brawley.

Brawley (5-7) hosts El Capitan at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Brawley 133, Central 37

BRAWLEY — Brawley Union High's boys swim team won all but three events Thursday to sink Central Union High 95-56.

Petter Malvik won two races for the Wildcats and swam on two victorious relay teams. Malvik clocked 1 minute, 6.96 seconds to win the 100-yard butterfly and 5:41.65 to win the 500 freestyle. He teamed with Robbie Overstreet, Ethan Schoch and Trevor Smith to win the 400 free relay in 4:09.5 and with Schoch, Overstreet and Mike Sims to win the 200 medley relay (2:01.21).

Brawley's Bradley Huber won the 200 free (2:30.31), Schoch won the 200 individual medley (2:36.97), Overstreet won the 50 free (25.43) and Kienan Huber won the 100 backstroke (1:27.63).

Central's Fabian Amparano won the 100 free (57.23) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.25). He teamed with Ceasar Garcia, Thomas Kodama and Isaiah McKinney to win the 200 free relay (1:55.67).

Brawley's girls won every event in a 133-37 triumph. They also placed first through third in five of eight individual events.

Jennifer Cardenas and Stephanie Luckey both won two individual events for the Wildcats. Cardenas won the 200 free (2:12.4) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.4) and Luckey won the 500 free (16:11.06) and the 100 back (1:13.25). Luckey swam on the winning 200 medley relay team with Brooke Pace, Cardenas and Lauren Roberts (2:06.62). Cardenas swam on the winning 400 free relay with Erica Smith, Tracy King and Natalia Cardenas (4:09.88).

King won the 200 IM (2:30.15), Roberts won the 50 free (27.78), Natalia Cardenas won the 100 free (1:00.75) and Pace won the 100 breast (1:14.7). Pace, King, Denae Smith and Roberts won the 200 free relay (1:54.6).

College baseball

IVC 7, Southwestern 5

CHULA VISTA — George Rapp went the distance on the mound, yielding 10 hits, as Imperial Valley College's baseball team edged host Southwestern on Thursday 7-5.

Brett Cochran went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Humberto Cardenas homered, Alan Rivera and Ryan Parker both doubled and singled, and Cory Moreno doubled.

IVC (3-6 Pacific Coast Conference) hosts San Diego Mesa at noon Saturday. Cochran will make his debut on the mound for the Arabs.
