CALEXICO — This city's Housing Authority Board of Commissioners interviewed three candidates Thursday for the administration's vacant executive director position.

Each candidate was interviewed for an hour.

Neither of the candidates was offered the job after the sessions were over but "these are the three top contenders," said board chairman Jesus "Chuy" Solano.

The three candidates interviewed were selected from a pool of six applicants.

Interim Executive Director Christina Rojas will be replaced after the board hires a new director.

Longtime director Lupita Rios was fired late last year.

After the interview sessions, the board gave direction to authority attorney Eduardo Rivera to perform background checks on those interviewed.

Solano said, "We don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We want to make the best choice and make sure their backgrounds are clear."

The board could decide to hire someone as soon as the next meeting March 28 but no final decision on the timing has yet been made.
