Month-old robbery probe ends in arrest

March 26, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — Police here arrested a 24-year-old Brawley resident Monday for a strong-arm robbery that occurred in this city earlier in the month.

Brawley police Lt. John Myers said police arrested Ernest Ruiz on Monday night near the Jack-in-the-Box at 315 W. Main St. after a witness who allegedly saw him commit a previous crime recognized him.

Myers said Ruiz allegedly took the wallet of Enrique Sandoval Felix, 44, on March 18 after Felix had withdrawn money from an automated teller machine outside of the Government Agencies Federal Credit Union at 205 Main St. in Brawley. Ruiz and Felix struggled a bit over the wallet but Ruiz was able to take it from Felix and flee.

Myers said another person was waiting in line after Felix and witnessed the entire incident. That witness saw Ruiz at the restaurant and called police.
