IVC opens tourney with three wins

SAN DIEGO — The Imperial Valley College softball team kicked off play in the San Diego City Tournament here Monday by going 3-0 in its games.

IVC kicked off the day with a 10-1 win over Mount San Jacinto in five innings. Jenny Briseño pitched all five innings, gave up five hits, allowed no earned runs, struck out one and walked one.

Maria Hansen-Perez picked up the win in game two as the Arabs topped College of the Desert 7-4. Hansen-Perez pitched a complete game, gave up six hits, allowed four earned runs, struck out three and walked two. She hit a go-ahead three-run home run and finished a double shy of the cycle.

The Arabs wrapped up the day with an 8-4 victory over Laney College.

Jenny Briseño picked up the win, going four innings, allowing seven hits, striking out three and giving up two earned runs. Hansen-Perez notched the save in pitching two innings and striking out four.


For the day, Adela Green led the Arab offense going 7-for-10 with two RBI, followed by Hansen-Perez, who went 7-for-11 with seven RBI. Olga Noris went 5-for-10 with three RBI and Amber Marquez finished 3-for-7 with six RBI for IVC.

The Arabs finished with 32 hits in the three-game stretch.

IVC (17-10) played Porterville in tournament action at 9 today.

Central 13, Point Loma 2

Horizon 4, Central 1

SAN DIEGO — The Central Union High softball team kicked off the Madison Tournament here Monday by splitting games with Point Loma and Horizon.

Central used an 11-run first inning to begin the tournament with a 13-2 victory over Point Loma in five innings.

Clarissa Maldonado and Liz Lechuga both finished 1-for-3 and recorded grand slams in the first inning for Central.

Nicky Carrion picked up the win, pitching two innings giving up two runs and two hits and striking out one. Marissa Guzman pitched three innings and struck out one.

Despite a 10-strikeout performance from Carrion, the Spartans lost 4-1 to Horizon. Carrion pitched a complete game, giving up five hits. Lechuga finished with an RBI and Vanessa Long added a triple for the Spartans (5-5).

Central plays Marian Catholic at 2 today and plays Clairemont at 4.

Brawley 3, San Dieguito 0

Clairemont 10, Brawley 4

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High softball team kicked off play in the Madison Tournament here Monday going 1-1 in beating San Dieguito Academy 3-0 and losing to Clairemont 10-4.

Leighan Sudduth picked up the win against San Dieguito, allowing only two hits. Trisha Fleming went 3-for-3 with a run in that game.

Stephanie Murray took the loss against Clairemont.

The Wildcats play Our Lady of Peace at 2 today and Horizon at 4.
