Vasquez triggers Spartans

SAN DIEGO — Javier Vasquez finished 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI as the Central Union High baseball team doubled up Mar Vista 10-5 on the first day of the Lions Tournament here Monday.

Leo Ibarra pitched five innings to notch the win for Central (8-1).

The Spartans finished with 16 hits, with Mario Gastellum going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Kevin Betz going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

Central plays Bear River of Grass Valley at noon today.

Imperial 11, San Dieguiito 10

SAN DIEGO — Julian Lopez went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Imperial High baseball team to an 11-10 victory over San Dieguito Academy in the first round of the Lions Tournament here Monday.

Aaron Hartsock picked up the win, throwing 1 1/3 innings, with Eddie Martinez earning the save in pitching an inning.

Kevin Williams, Dillon Foster and Hartsock all finished with two hits for Imperial. Foster knocked in a run.


Imperial (5-5) plays Boulder City in tournament action at noon today.

Southwest 1, Wood River 0

SAN DIEGO — The Southwest High baseball team kicked off play in the Lions Tournament here Monday with a 1-0 win over Wood River High of Idaho.

Chuck Ainza finished 2-for-3 for Southwest and Joey Clayton scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a double steal.

Alex Caldera picked up the win. He pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out five. The Eagle defense turned three double plays.

Southwest (7-6) plays Crawford at 3 today in tournament action.

St. Augustine 7, Brawley 6

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High baseball team got off on the wrong foot in the Lions Tournament here Monday, losing 7-6 to St. Augustine.

David Santana gave up two earned runs in the final inning to take the loss for Brawley.

Mitchell Ruiz finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Matt Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Santana was 1-for-3 with a run for the Wildcats.

Brawley (6-2) plays Valley Center at noon today in tournament action.

Boys golf

Holtville 356, Brawley 364

BRAWLEY — The Holtville High golf team improved to 8-3 with a 356-364 victory over Brawley at the Del Rio Country Club here Monday.

Medalist for Holtville was Steven Hawk with an 80, followed by Caleb Sandin with an 83, Adam Durant with a 96 and Colby Drye with a 97.

Leading Brawley were Preston Soto and Steven Gibson with 88s followed by Taylor Smith with a 90 and Mark Miller with a 98.

Brawley (6-8) hosts El Capitan at 2:30 today and Holtville (8-3) hosts Central at 2 p.m. Friday.

Southwest 153, Yuma Catholic 204

HOLTVILLE — Bill Skinner shot an even-par 35 Monday to lead Southwest High's boys golf team to a 153-204 win over Yuma Catholic at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort.

Arek Legarra and Bobby Kirby both carded 39 on the front nine and Tyler Douthitt added 40 for Southwest

Southwest (8-3 overall, 2-2 Imperial Valley League) competes at 7 a.m. Thursday in a tournament at Desert Princess in Palm Springs.
