Excessive speed appears to have been the cause of a fatal accident Monday afternoon on Brown Road north of Evan Hewes Highway in El Centro.
The sole occupant of a sedan, a correctional officer at Centinela State Prison, was northbound on Brown Road when he lost control of his vehicle as he failed to negotiate a curve. The car skidded across the southbound lane and went off the west edge of the roadway.
Police say the vehicle then traveled down a dirt embankment, overturned and rolled a short distance before coming to a stop.
The driver, who was apparently on his way to work, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, the driver was wearing his seat belt.
