Imperial wins in last at-bat


LA JOLLA — Imperial High's baseball team defeated La Jolla Country Day 11-10 by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning at the Lions Tournament on Wednesday.

The winning run came home when Aaron Hartsock's infield grounder was misplayed by the third baseman.

Julian Lopez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Imperial. Eddie Martinez went the distance on the mound, yielding 12 hits.

Imperial (6-6) plays next at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Francis Parker High in San Diego.

Rancho Verde 11, Calexico 0

Calexico 4, Steele Canyon 3

El Cajon 7, Calexico 1

SAN DIEGO — Calexico High's baseball team went 1-2 in the Lions Tournament in recent days. The Bulldogs lost to Rancho Verde 11-0 Monday, defeated Steele Canyon 4-3 Tuesday and fell to El Cajon Valley 7-1 Wednesday.


Calexico was hurt by seven errors in the loss to Rancho Verde; eight of the runs were unearned. Albert Garcia had the lone hit for Calexico. Jorge Lluis suffered the loss on the mound.

J.P. Gonzalez homered in the win over Steele Canyon. Hector Sanchez was the winning pitcher, with seventh-inning relief from Enok Madrigal.

Four errors hurt Calexico in the loss to El Cajon Valley as five of the runs given up were unearned. Garcia went 3-for-3. Gonzalez was the losing pitcher.

Calexico (6-6) faces Desert Hot Springs at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Coachella in the Coachella Tournament.

Madison 10, Southwest 0

SAN DIEGO — Southwest High's baseball team concluded play in the Lions Tournament with a 10-0 loss to Madison High on Wednesday.

"We played very shoddy defense for the second game in a row," Eagles coach Mickey Carter said.

Southwest committed four miscues in the field.

Ricky Lopez doubled and Alex Caldera singled for the only Eagle hits. Brian Martinez suffered the loss on the mound.

Southwest (7-8) hosts Francis Parker at 11:30 a.m. on April 6.

Central 6, Calvin Christian 2

SAN DIEGO — The Central Union High baseball team finished the Lions Tournament with a 2-1 mark, beating Calvin Christian on Wednesday 6-2.

Enrique Lechuga slammed a two-run home run to pace the Spartans. Sergio Garcia picked up the win.

Central (9-2) plays a 3:15 p.m. game April 9 at Palo Verde High in Blythe.

Boys golf

Central 164, Holtville 183

HOLTVILLE — Mario Luna shot a one-under-par 34 Wednesday to lead Central Union High's boys golf team to a 164-183 win over Holtville.

Ivan Haro shot a 38 for the Spartans, Chris Robb carded 44 and Kyle Ott added 48.

Stephen Hawk led Holtville with a 42, Caleb Sandin hit 44, Adam Durrant shot 47 and Colby Drye added 50.

Central (8-3 overall) teed off at 7 this morning in the Tribute For Youth tournament at Doral Country Club near Palm Desert. Holtville (8-4) faces Imperial High at 3 today at Del Rio Country Club in Brawley.
