Calexico police will be operating checkpoint Saturday aimed at enforcing drinking, driving laws

March 29, 2002

CALEXICO — On Saturday the Calexico Police Department will be operating a checkpoint in Calexico.

The checkpoint will be for the enforcement of drinking and driving laws, as well as seat belt and child-safety seat violations.

In February the Calexico Police Department was awarded a traffic safety grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Some of the goals of the grant are increased enforcement of traffic laws to reduce accidents, education and enforcement of traffic laws to reduce accidents, education and enforcement of child safety seat and seat-belt laws and student driver safety education at the local schools.

To bring attention to the nationwide problem of drinking and driving, the grant also funds a series of sobriety checkpoints. The checkpoints are designed for the education of the motoring public about the seriousness of drinking and driving, as well as the evaluation and arrest of those found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
