>>50 years ago — The American Red Cross drive ended today with a $4,750 effort. This amount was collected by the Red Cross Brawley chapter.

>>40 years ago — Imperial Hardware Co. will hold its 31st annual golf tournament tomorrow at the Barbara Worth Country Club. Competition is limited to store employees and tee-off time will be at 8 a.m.

>>30 years ago — Imperial County Agricultural Commissioner Claude Finnell called on Valleyites to act as a community in zoning areas for feedlots in which to house a predicted 1 million head of cattle in the near future. Finnell said agriculture has changed so that now its is based on livestock and cattle feeding.

>>20 years ago — While small cities consider breaking up in the wake of Proposition 13, the Heber community wants to become a city. Community leaders are counting on the vast geothermal reserves beneath Heber to power the town into cityhood.
