Rodney Auditorium seating campaign kicks off Tuesday

April 01, 2002|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — Mayor Pro Tem John Renison hopes to see hundreds of his fellow Calexico High School graduates take a seat at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Rodney Auditorium at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus.

Renison said, "It is important to point out the event Tuesday will accomplish two things: kick off the $80,000 new seating campaign and show the renovated stage, curtain, etc., to the attendees."

With renovations on the auditorium about finished, Renison, director of advancement for SDSU-IV, has spearheaded a campaign to raise $80,000 so the university can buy new seats for Rodney Auditorium.

The auditorium features a new stage, paint job and lighting fixtures but has the same chairs that thousands of Calexico High graduates twitched in nervously waiting for their names to be called.

To round up money for new seats, the university will sell the old seats to Calexico High graduates and anyone else who might want just one for sentimental reasons or a row for their home theater. In addition, the university will allow benefactors to pay and have nameplates added to the new seats.

Renison will discuss the prices of the old seats and the cost of sponsoring the new seats at the event.

Other speakers will include Calexico Mayor Victor Carrillo; Ralph Pesqueira, California State University trustee; Khosrow Fatemi, campus dean; Norma Saikhon, county public administrator and chairwoman of the dean's advisory board and Beatriz Zayas, president of the SDSU-Imperial Valley campus alumni chapter and SDSU student representatives.
