Optimists name oratorical winners

The Optimist Club of El Centro has announced the winners of the club's annual oratorical contest.

The contest, sponsored by local clubs and Optimist International, is open to students under age 16.

The gold medal in the girls' competition was awarded to Clarissa Acuña, 13, of St. Mary's Catholic School. Tessa Saikhon, 12, of McCabe Union Elementary School took second place and Candice DeGeus, 14, from Wilson Junior High School in El Centro, took third place.

McCabe student Bryce Brown, 12, earned the gold medal in the boys' competition. Juan Guajardo, 13, and Patrick Yanni, 14, both from St. Mary's School, took second and third place respectively.

The two gold medalists will advance to the zone-level competition, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 11 in Department 5 of the Imperial County Courthouse. There, they will compete for the honor of representing Imperial County at the district-level competition.

District competition draws contestants from throughout Imperial and San Diego counties, and will result in the awarding of two $1,500 scholarships to the winning orators.
