CALEXICO — Rep. Bob Filner, D-Chula Vista, plans to address farm worker advocates Wednesday morning at a monthly meeting of the Farmworker's Services Coalition of Imperial County.

The coalition brings together representatives from the state Employment Development Department, county health officials, various law enforcement officials and representatives of other service agencies that support farm workers.

Because of the audience expected for Filner's address, the event will be staged in City Hall and will start at 8:15 a.m.

After Filner makes his speech, coalition chairman Johnny Rodriguez plans to ask him to help divert federal funds to programs that help train migrant workers for industrial and commercial employment.

The timing is good for Rodriguez's call for assistance, according to Loli Torres, an outreach worker for the farm worker community at Calexico's EDD office. She said the office was packed this morning with field laborers who have been laid off from seasonal jobs.
